Mission

The mission of the Family Self-Sufficiency Program is to assist local Hmong refugees in overcoming social and mental health problems that hinder their ability to become independent and self–sufficient.

Family Self-Sufficiency Program

Provides counseling services to new Hmong refugees.

We can help with:

  • Clients who are experiencing difficulties in the transition to work due to language, cultural, or educational barriers.
  • Clients who are having problems with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which acts as a barrier to successful adjustment in a new cultural environment.
  • Clients who have multiple barriers, such as mastery of the English language, literacy, criminal history, emotional difficulties, personal issues, or mental health problems.
  • Behavioral health problems which are significant barriers to achieving self - sufficiency in the era of "time – limited” benefits.
  • Home visitation
  • Problems with keeping a job or staying in school.
  • Difficulties coping with life stressors, such as separation, divorce, death, and parenting, neglect, or abuse.
  • Lack of self – confidence, low self – esteem, depression, hopelessness, or anger control
  • Thoughts of suicide,  fear, anxiety, panic, or confusion
  • Substance abuse including referrals for long-term services.
  • Family crises, such as injury, disability, or death in the family.Hmong Children


 On-Site Social Services:

  • Intake and Assessment, plan development, service referral, plan management, and related supportive assistance.
  • Translation and interpretation, transportation, food distribution, landlord disputes, legal issues, physical and mental health services, and related difficulties.
  • Language-specific assistance to Hmong clients in overcoming social and mental health challenges which hinder their ability to become independent and self – sufficient.
  • Life skills training for learning day-to-day coping skills.
  • Assistance to clients and their families who feel isolated or who lack knowledge of community resources.
  • Instruction and suggested techniques for anger management, parenting, and family strengthening.
  • Referrals to treatment programs.
  • Language accessible staff for clients. Treatment program culturally and linguistically suited to the Hmong clients in order to provide behavioral support services.
  • Ensuring access to treatment and program referrals for any “hard to serve” clients in order to provide behavioral support services.
